    Commentary

  • Puthoor’s work is an interesting juxtaposition of the ancient and contemporary, spiritual and scientific, fantastic and real, abstract and narrative, that merge together in an aesthetically pleasing whole; communicative, compelling, and decorative at once. Endowed with numerous symbolic images and signs such as a tree to suggest growth and wish-fulfillment, lingam and yoni symbolic of erotic desire and beauty, birds in flight signifying human desire and robotic figures that point to the digital age; his work is an expression of joy and festivity as well as a concern for nature and the issues that confront contemporary society. He does not allow his ideas to overburden the images, which remain hi forceful. A fanciful play of imagination with reality continues to be the focus for Pradeep Sukamaran Puthoor’s creative oeuvre, which he says has been influenced by Henry Rousseau. Puthoor is a shy man who continues to work quietly from a hamlet in a remote part of South India. Not seen in the arts circle and unmindful of market trends, buyers’ expectations, or spectators’ interpretations, the joy of drawing and painting is his motivation. “My approach and treatment is spontaneous. I let my mind shape what I create on the canvas”.
